Day 7: Lake Havasu to Kingman, AZ

Get your kicks on Route Sixty-Six?  Uh, not so much.  I’ve been on Route 66 in quaint little towns–nice.  Out here in AZ–not so nice.  Video captures a long-winded description of today’s trial.  Instead of reiterating the video, let’s answer some of my sister’s emailed questions, yes?

Q:  So, you mention all this good food, but you do not really describe it

A: All kinds of different salads (pasta, caprize, bulgar), sandwich fixings, apple/nut salad, asian salads, all kinds of things.  I love the granola/raisin/craisin/M&M mix they put out.

Q: What time do you go to bed?

A: I try to go to bed at 9:30.  Read a little. Lights out.  Only hitch every night–waking up at 2:00 or 3:00.  Fortunately, I fall back asleep (I just run the day’s route through my mind again–not all that exciting).

Q: Are you working still?

A: Yes, on and off.  2-3 time zone issues create a little bit of challenge; I expect to hit it more in the coming weeks.  Email is helpful.

Q:  How many folks are fundraising?

A:  Bill and Joseph are raising funds (check their links on the sidebar to right).  Not sure about the others.

Q:  At what point is it going to get cold?

A: It will get “cooler” at the Grand Canyon.  I think the real cold weather won’t be until east of the Mississippi.

Q: What is a stella?

A: What is Stella?  Uh, really, Dana, you need to get out more.  Stella is the best beer from Belgium on the planet.  That’s all.

Q:  You like everyone on the trip a lot?

A:  Bikers are naturally cool people, so we all get along well.  We had a great dinner last night and shared a lot of laughs and stories.  Yes, a great group of riders.  And if they can put up with me, that’s a double bonus.  And the guides are a hoot, too.  Great personalities.

Q: So is Jennifer buying some diamonds or something while you are away?

A: Not sure on the diamonds.  I believe she plans on throwing a huge “Girl’s Night Out” party at the house while I’m away.  She’s got a lot going on (hopefully no time for diamond shopping).

Pictures:  Entering Route 66; Along the way on Rt66; Town of Oatman (66 runs right threw it and burros walk around freely); Sitgreaves Pass–peak at 3,583 ft or so; Tourist stop at bottom of descent;

Joseph’s award-winning helmet-cam footage: (our group rolling past the rest of the group and off the Interstate); (Austin and I winding our way up/down Rte66); (Joseph and Bill looking back on a monster climb); (part of the descent–MOM, DON’T WATCH THIS ONE); (I’m pointing out a “Steep Grades Warning” sign)

By the numbers:  84.8 miles; riding time: 5:18:35; avg speed 16 (climbing at 9 mph will kill your avg–not that it matters); 5,600 ft of climbing; Total for the trip so far:  523.3 miles

    Good Morning Jeff!

Love the “By The Numbers”! Avg? Who cares!

Nice win by the “W” yesterday! Blocked extra point sealed the deal vs ASU!!

    Keep on rocking along!!

Hey, Ces. Glad you like the numbers section. Adding “Total Climbing going forward. But through first 7 days, we’re at 18,940 ft. Although, Joseph has 20,312 ft. It’s a hard number to get perfectly right.
And the Badgers pulled one off. A little iffy. But a W is a W for UW.

Jeff, have been following your adventure. In a word…awesome. Update from KP, due to your absense, iron is getting rusty…Chris nowhere to be seen…you girls and boys be safe.

Casey, glad to see you are onboard. Amazing journey so far. Give Chris a punch from me when (if) you see him. Tell him, it’s from me.

  3. Gini Dietrich / Sep 19 2010 7:56 pm

This is fantastic! But you’re right…Dana, you need to get out more.

  4. Tabatha / Sep 23 2010 8:12 pm

    Jeff….Jennifer deserves diamonds….drinks with the girls….and a big spa weekend! 🙂

She deserves a lot–there’s no doubt about that.
