Day 5: 29 Palms, CA to Parker, AZ

Today was epic.  No other word for it.  We left 29 Palms as the sun was coming up.  As we left town, we were warned by a sign saying “No Services for Next 100 Miles.”  The sign wasn’t lying.  There is nothing in the Mojave Desert.  Nothing.  Two coyotes crossed the road as we left and a buzzard flew over after awhile to see if we were going to make it.  The power of Team A crushed the Mojave.  I pulled our group out of town for eight or so miles and then we got in a great rhythm of taking turns at the front.  It wasn’t too hot for most of the ride, but towards the 75th mile (out of 109), it started heating up.  I was feeling really, really good in the heat at the end, so I took the last 20 miles at the front keeping to a steady 21 mph.  I’m sure the guys could have kept up the rotation, but I just felt too good.  And, tomorrow is a really short day–a rolling recovery day of sorts.

Pics include the view from our water stop at Mile 25 and two views from lunch spot at Mile 50.  And of course, crossing into Arizona in the lovely city of Parker.

Today is my daughter’s birthday.  So today’s on-the-road video is, of course, Team A and Karl (who we beat to lunch, although he had a late start…still, we beat him by five whole minutes!) singing HBD to Lindsay.

Helmet-cam footage from Joseph: (leading out the group at dawn); (out in the desert)

By the numbers:  109 miles.  Average speed 20.4.  Riding time 5:20:56; Total miles so far 396.5
